Listening Habits is a feature in your Audience dashboard that gives you insight into what your fans are actively listening to on Spotify. It allows you to better understand fan preferences and build highly targeted audience segments.

How Listening Habits Works

Listening Habits data is collected directly from fans who connect (authenticate) their Spotify accounts.

  • Data is captured at the moment of authentication
  • It is refreshed each time a fan re-authenticates their Spotify account
  • Insights reflect recent listening behavior (approximately the past 6 months)

This ensures that the data stays current and representative of fans’ evolving music tastes.

Listening Habits Categories

Listening Habits is organized into three key categories:

Top Artists

A fan’s top 50 artists, based on their Spotify listening activity over the past ~6 months.

Top Tracks

A fan’s top 50 tracks, also based on listening behavior during the same timeframe.

Genres

Genres are derived from the fan’s top artists:

  • Genres are pulled from each artist’s Spotify profile
  • Duplicates are removed (deduplicated)
  • Genres are then ranked by frequency
  • The result is the fan’s top 50 most recurring genres

Using Listening Habits for Segmentation

Listening Habits can be used to build audience segments based on fan preferences.

Searching by Artist or Track (Top Artists & Top Tracks)

When creating a segment, you can search using:

  • Your own Spotify artist profile (automatically linked via your Artist Settings)
  • Any artist available on Spotify (Pro plans only)

A match will be returned when:

  • A fan has that artist in their Top Artists, or
  • A fan has a track in their Top Tracks that is credited to that artist

Searching by Genre

You can also segment by genre by entering genre keywords such as:

  • rock
  • pop
  • rap
  • classical

These genres are matched against those associated with artists in a fan’s Listening Habits.

Plan Availability

Listening Habits is available across the following plans:

  • Artist
  • Pro Artist
  • Marketer
  • Pro Marketer

Access levels vary by plan:

  • Artist and Marketer plans
    • Can search only their own Spotify artist profile for Top Artists and Top Tracks
  • Pro Artist and Pro Marketer plans
    • Can search any artist on Spotify for Top Artists and Top Tracks
